The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is compelling from the very first taste. It boasts fabulous concentration and depth, with just enough tannin and aromatic complexity to balance some of the wine’s more overt leanings. The 2007 is distinguished by an open, Pinot-like bouquet and a voluptuous personality. The wine was aged one year in cask and a second year in 600-liter demi-muids. The 2006 Barolo Ravera is darker, richer and more sensual than the Cascina Nuova. Layers of dark fruit intermingled with sweet balsamic nuances of cloves, pine and menthol flow effortlessly from the Ravera. The richness of the density matches the tannins step by step all the way through to a sensual, inviting finish that begs for another taste. This, too, is a superb effort. Ravera isn’t usually considered one of the very finest sites for Nebbiolo in Barolo, but in Cogno’s hands the fruit seems to reach an unprecedented level of finesse and elegance. The complex aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, powerful, well-delineated Cairanne with plenty of tannin and depth. It is capable of lasting 7-8 years.

It reveals a richly concentrated personality with the compelling perfumed inner sweetness that is the hallmark of this great vineyard. The wine offers terrific energy and structure, with gorgeous, silky tannins that round out the sweet, lingering finish. The Cannubi was still in oak when I tasted it in mid-November 2007. 90-92 Parker point til Saint Damien, Cote du Rhone, Cuvée Bouveau 2009 The 2009 Cotes du Rhone La Bouveau is an intriguing blend of 80% Syrah and the rest Grenache, Cinsault, and a little Viognier, aged in concrete prior to being bottled. Delicious notes of forest flora, blue and red fruits, licorice, lavender and garrigue all combine into a classic wine of Provence. Medium to full-bodied, with loads of fruit and a heady alcohol level of 15.1%, this beauty should drink well for another 2-3 years, possibly a lot longer, but who can resist it now? Both of these wines over-deliver significantly for an appellation as humble as the Cotes du Rhone, but that is the great beauty of this vast area of southern France. Parker

The 2009 Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes is 90% Grenache and the rest Mourvedre and Carignan, aged in cement tank and tipping the scales at 14.8% alcohol. The average age of the vines, from the stony soils of the Plan de Dieu, is 50 years. This is another full-bodied, superbly concentrated wine with the classic black cherry marmalade/kirsch notes intermixed with licorice, spring flowers, pepper, and a hint of garrigue. This ripe, full-bodied wine is opulent, voluptuously textured, long and rich. Both of these wines over-deliver significantly for an appellation as humble as the Cotes du Rhone, but that is the great beauty of this vast area of southern France. Parker

Siciliansk Topscorer Ceuso’s Fastaia is one of the great values in Italian wine and it is once again superb in 2008. Fastaia, a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot aged in cement is essentially the second wine of the estate’s top of the line Ceuso. Gorgeous, well-delineated aromatics lead to ripe, dark fruit, grilled herbs, spices and cassis in a rich, yet beautifully balanced style. The fruit covers the tannins through to the long finish. Readers will have a hard time finding a better wine for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018. 91 point Parker

91 point fra Parker til Burgaud, Javernieres, Morgon "The Burgaud 2008 Morgon Cote de Py Javernieres displays a resinous hint of oak but beyond that a more fascinating aromatic complexity of cassis, blackberry, bacon, and herbs. Palate-staining in its sappy intensity and persistently bright and smoky, this impressive bottling nonetheless confirms my impression that extended barrique elevage did not – and he agrees – pay additional dividends with Burgaud’s raw 2008 material in the way that I feel confident it will with his top 2009s (which, as noted in my account of them, he plans to bottle earlier than he did their 2008 counterparts). Incidentally, the same individual barrels were employed for the maturation of Burgaud’s 2009 Javernieres, the contents of one of which exhibited an overtly resinous overtone, leading it to be culled from the final assemblage. It is a deeper, fuller-bodied, more expansive, longer wine boasting a dense plum/ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of black raspberries, black cherries, earth, garrigue, and flowers. Broad, full-bodied, and rich with impressive purity, texture, and length, this wine can be enjoyed now, but it will be even better in 2-3 years; it should last for two decades. Sadly, production is only around 4,000 bottles for this brilliant effort.

The wine spent 30 months in 10% new American oak, 25% new French oak, and 65% old French barrels. Purple in color, it displays scents of cedar, lavender, incense, rosemary, smoked meat, and blueberry. Plush on the palate with a sense of elegance, this incredibly intense, savory, impeccably balanced Shiraz has layers of flavor, and is amazingly light on its feet. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.
