The 2006 Black Guts Shiraz competes favorably with its predecessors. The wine spent 30 months in 10% new American oak, 25% new French oak, and 65% old French barrels. Purple in color, it displays scents of cedar, lavender, incense, rosemary, smoked meat, and blueberry. Plush on the palate with a sense of elegance, this incredibly intense, savory, impeccably balanced Shiraz has layers of flavor, and is amazingly light on its feet. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

Christian Canute’s signature style of winemaking usually pays off with distinctive wines unlike anything else coming out of Barossa Valley.

The 2007 Dogliani Vigna Tecc (Dolcetto) is a big, powerful wine imbued with tons of perfumed dark fruit. This soft-textured, generous red offers exceptional depth and a long, harmonious finish, where floral notes add a note of lift. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012.

The blockbuster 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige is made from the same blend as the previous two wines, from 80- to 100-year-old vines. It is a deeper, fuller-bodied, more expansive, longer wine boasting a dense plum/ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of black raspberries, black cherries, earth, garrigue, and flowers. Broad, full-bodied, and rich with impressive purity, texture, and length, this wine can be enjoyed now, but it will be even better in 2-3 years; it should last for two decades. Sadly, production is only around 4,000 bottles for this brilliant effort.
